It'd be awesome if the feed tab wasn't constantly telling me "NEW" despite there being nothing new on it.

Ah, I see the confusion here. The NEW badge is to indicate that it's a new feature. But seeing as it's been out for a while now, most users should know about it and it time to update :-)
