Ads massively slow down low-end devices
Existence Is Pain
I use a school-allotted Chromebook. Obviously I can't just go downloading applications willy-nily with that, so Magma was my solution: a capable browser-based program. It's always had a lot of trouble running it, but it's worked well enough that I could make real art. However, with these newer animated ads, it's near impossible to actually draw from the sheer lag it causes. I'll have to wait for several minutes at some points for it to process and let me draw, occasionally crashing entirely and making Magma throw up an error for a few more minutes. I understand having ads, but dear lord, this is unworkable. Working on my Chromebook was the entire reason I use this site, and at this rate I'm going to have to abandon it. At the very least have a toggle to disable animations, that's likely the bulk of the problem.

I’m sorry to hear that the ads have made Magma so difficult to use on your Chromebook. We definitely don’t want ads to interfere with your ability to draw.
We’re working on performance improvements that should significantly reduce Magma’s memory usage, particularly on lower-end devices like Chromebooks. We hope to roll these out soon.
We’re also looking into offering an affordable, recurring ad-free plan for individual users.
In the meantime, if you’re using Magma through your school, we recently introduced Magma for Education, https://magma.com/education - your school may want to look at this option. This option gives school a dedicated, ad free option - ideal for edu use.
Thank you for your patience and for being part of Magma!
